ನನಗೆ ಚಂದಮಾಮದ  ಎರಡು ಕತೆಗಳು ನೆನಪಾದವು.

ಒಂದು

ಮಂತ್ರಿ ಪದವಿಗೆ ಇಬ್ಬರಿಗೆ ಒಂದೊಂದು 100 ಚಕ್ಕುಲಿ ಇರುವ ಡಬ್ಬ ದೂರದ ಊರಿಗೆ ಕೊಟ್ಟು ಬರಬೇಕು. 2 ದಿನದ ಪ್ರಯಾಣ. ಬುತ್ತಿ ತೆಗೆದುಕೊಂಡು ಹೋಗುವ ಹಾಗಿಲ್ಲ, ಯಾರನ್ನೂ ಮಾತನಾಡಿಸುವ ಹಾಗಿಲ್ಲ. ಊಟ ಬೇಡುವ ಹಾಗಿಲ್ಲ.

ಒಬ್ಬ ಊಟ ಇಲ್ಲದೇ ಹಸಿವಿನಿಂದ ಬಳಲಿ ಕೆಲವು ಚಕ್ಕುಲಿಗಳನ್ನು ತಿಂದು ಊರು ತಲುಪುತ್ತಾನೆ. 

ಇನ್ನೊಬ್ಬ ಎಲ್ಲ 100 ಚಕ್ಕುಲಿಗಳ ತುದಿಯನ್ನು ಒಂದೇ ತರಹದ ಸ್ವಲ್ಪ ತುಂಡು ಮಾಡಿ ಹಸಿವನ್ನು ನೀಗಿಸಿಕೊಳ್ಳುತ್ತಾನೆ. ಇವನೇ ಮಂತ್ರಿ ಅಂಥ ತೀರ್ಮಾನವಾಗುತ್ತದೆ.

ಎರಡು

ಇದೇ ತರಹ ಇಬ್ಬರು ಇನ್ನೊಂದು ರಾಜ್ಯಕ್ಕೆ ಹೋಗಿ ಬೂದಿಯನ್ನು ರಾಜನಿಗೆ ಕಾಣಿಕೆ ಅಂತ ಹೇಳಿ ಕೊಟ್ಟು  ಬರಬೇಕು.

ಒಬ್ಬ ಬೂದಿ ಅಂತ ಹೇಳಿದಾಗ ರಾಜನಿಗೆ ಕೋಪ ಬಂದು ಶಿಕ್ಷೆ ಕೊಡುತ್ತಾನೆ. ಅಲ್ಲೇ ಜೈಲು ವಾಸ ಆಗುತ್ತದೆ.

ಇನ್ನೊಬ್ಬ ಇನ್ನೊಂದು ರಾಜ್ಯಕ್ಕೆ ಹೋಗಿ, ದೇವರ ಭಸ್ಮ ಅಂತ ಹೇಳಿ ಸಾಕಷ್ಟು ಉಡುಗೊರೆಯಿಂದ ವಾಪಸ್ಸು ಬರುತ್ತಾನೆ. ಮಂತ್ರಿ ಪದವಿ ಸಿಗುತ್ತದೆ.

1970 ರ ದಶಕದ ಕಥೆ.

ಯಾರಿಗಾದರೂ ನೆನಪಿದೆಯೇ ?

I remembered two stories from Chandamama (a popular Indian children's magazine).

One:

For the post of Minister, two individuals were each required to take a box containing 100 chakkulis (a type of savory snack) to a distant village. The journey was for 2 days. They were not allowed to carry any packed food (butti), nor were they allowed to talk to anyone or beg for food.

One person, suffering from hunger due to lack of food, ate some of the chakkulis and reached the destination.

The other person managed to satisfy his hunger by cutting off a small, uniform piece from the tip of all 100 chakkulis. He was then decided to be the one fit to be the Minister.

Two:

In a similar situation, two people had to go to another kingdom and present the King with ash (būdi) as a gift.

When one person presented it merely as 'ash,' the King got angry and punished him. He ended up in jail there.

The other person went to the other kingdom and presented it as 'God's sacred ash' (dēvara bhasma). He returned with many gifts. He was given the post of Minister.
